William and Alison are the faces behind the business.
William being brought up on their home farm was always heavily involved in all farming activities right from a young age. From calf feeding to bedding to milking cows – William did it all. It was no surprise that when he grew up he wanted to be a Farmer.
However farming isn’t Williams only obsession. He is a total Rugby Fanatic and a massive Ulster Rugby Fan, he used to play for Coleraine RUFC in his younger days but there was one too many injuries; being self employed meant there wasn’t anyone to milk the cows if an injury put him off his feet. He also takes every opportunity he can to go Mountain Biking – his favourite local spots to go is Ballycastle Forest or Binevinagh.
William went to Coleraine Inst. then onto university in Newcastle Upon Tyne where he studied Agriculture for 3 years. He then travelled to New Zealand where he spent 10 months working and travelling. He worked on a large, grass based, spring calving Dairy farm. After this, he came home to farm full time on his home farm where you come to buy your milk!
Alison was also brought up on a Dairy Farm between Ballymoney and Armoy so she was well used to the Dairy Farming Lifestyle and knows all about standing in the gaps! Alison went to Ballycastle High School then onto Northumbria University in Newcastle Upon Tyne to study Food Science & Nutrition. Little did she know that in years to come this would deem very useful.
William and Alison met back in Halloween 2008 when they were 18 and 20. They got married in October 2015, fast forward a few years and they now have two boys, Edward and Rory.
Alison also travelled to New Zealand when she was 23 where she spent time working as an Au Pair to a family with two young girls in Auckland, then as a receptionist/house keeper in a motel in Franz Josef. When she wasn’t working she was travelling around doing the Kiwi Experience, she also spent 6 weeks travelling in Australia and 2 weeks in Thailand. They didn’t go out at the same time but they both thoroughly enjoyed their time away and highly recommend it to any young person who is thinking about it. In total, Alison spent 8 years working within the Food Industry then in September 2020 she left her job to come home to build and grow their own business. A difficult decision but one she does not regret. Alison wouldn’t be on the same level as William when it comes to sports, pilates, running or a good walk is more up her street. However, she might not like to admit it to William but she does like the bike he got her for her 30th! William and Alison work together, live together and bring up their two boys together. They are a team in every way and are so glad they opened The Milk Hut.
