honesty farm shop

We opened our Honesty Farm Shop back in December 2022. If you remember, 2022 was a bit of a funny year. The year after two years of Covid. We opened the Milk Vending Machine during covid and the response was phenomenal. For the rest of 2020 and 2021, we were extremely busy just selling milk and our reuseable glass bottles. However, 2022 brought back routine for many families, and the cost of living really started to increase including the price of Diesel. Also, the summer of 2022 many families travelled abroad for their holiday rather than venturing to the Port which they had done for the two years previously.

So we felt we had to pivot our business slightly and do something to bring customers back – and thought an Honesty Farm Shop was the perfect way to do this. We already had the space in the Cabin (which we used to live in) behind The Milk Hut, at that time it was just storage and not being used for anything else.

We made this decision in September 2022 and then started kitting the room out with shelves etc to make it into a shop and ready to open in December.

Suppliers

All the products available in our shop are all from suppliers within the Island of Ireland and we are proud to say we currently support well over 40 different Irish producers.

We have such a wide range of produce within the shop such as Fresh Sourdough Bread (Tuesday & Friday deliveries), homemade traybakes, fresh wheaten bread, charcuterie products, local cheeses, chutneys, jams & curds, local butter, bacon, pies, ginger shots & wyne, crisps, we also sell our own Greek Style Yoghurt and Beef! Honestly, there is so much available within our little shop, it is worth a visit.

We always like to try different products, so if you are a producer reading this and would like to supply our shop, please get in touch.

diet

The cows are fed a mainly forage based diet. This consists of silage during the winter (grass that has been preserved during summer) and fresh grass during the summer, this is mainly in the form of cut and carry grass that we cut and bring to the cows but we are also working at getting the cows out to graze more each year. Another main component of the cows diet is bought in grain (wheat, barley and oats) this is grown and stored by a neighbouring arable (crop) farmer and delivered as we need it throughout the winter. There is also a large amount of concentrate feed bought from feed mills and consists of high protein, high energy blends and nuts which we use to balance the cows diet.

Honesty Shop – How does it work?

Yes our shop is an Honesty Shop. Most of the time it is not manned, but our phone numbers are available if you have any queries and there is also CCTV in progress. All our products will have a price on them. You choose what you want then add it up (don’t worry, there is a calculator available if you’re not feeling like testing your mental maths!!), you can either pay via the Honesty Box which requires the correct money as you can’t get change out or there is a card reader available. Our opening hours are the same as the Milk Vending Machine, we are open daily from 7:30-7:30. Hopefully you can visit our shop soon!

Honesty is always the best policy.
