Our milk is sustainable and has low food miles. The only miles on our milk are the miles you travel to buy it which is significantly less than the food miles within supermarkets.
We process milk from our herd of Dairy Cows. The milk is pumped directly into the pasteuriser from the Milking parlour during milking time. We process our milk differently to the larger creameries. We gently pasteurise our milk which means we heat it to 63°C for 30 minutes which is a lower temperature for longer. In comparison, the larger creameries process their milk at 72°C for 15 seconds, known as flash pasteurisation.
Larger creameries also homogenise milk, this involves milk being pumped through small openings under very high pressure. The aim of this is to reduce the size of the fat globule into minuscule portions so that it is dispersed evenly through the milk. This then means that the cream within the milk will not rise to the top as it has been broken down.
Our milk has also not been standardised. Standardisation means that all the fat is removed from the milk then gradually fed back in to a certain percentage (3.7% fat). Our milk is usually between 4.0-4.5% Fat depending on the time of year.
After our milk is pasteurised and cooled to <6°C, it is gravity fed into a tank on wheels. This tank of milk is then pushed across the yard into our Milk Vending Machine within The Milk Hut where you can also buy Branded Reusable Glass Bottles.
Our milk is as close to how nature intended it to be, it is:
The larger creameries started to homogenise milk to stop the cream rising to the top, to extend the shelf life and to give milk that pure white colour, whereas naturally milk is creamy in colour.
Larger creameries also standardise their milk, this means that prior to pasteurisation the cream and the milk are at first separated, then the cream is gradually added back into the milk to a specified fat content. The typical specification for fat content in Whole Milk in the UK is 3.5%. Standardisation is carried out to maintain consistent nutritional value throughout the year as fat content within milk can naturally fluctuate due to the time of year and stage in the lactation cycle. Our milk would be on average 4% fat.

We sell Branded Reusable Glass Bottles from a vending machine within The Milk Hut. We sell them in 1 Litre Sizes and 250ml Size which corresponds to the volume dispensed in the Milk Machine.
We encourage customers to purchase our bottles and make the switch from plastic back to glass like the good old days. These bottles can be washed in the dishwasher or with hot soapy water at home prior to returning to the farm to refill.
